Night of the Demons (1988)

The 80s were a wonderful time for film fans. We got a wealth of great movies of all kinds, including many that got a second chance on VHS. That includes a huge number of horror films. Some were masterpieces of fright, others were knockoffs of the masterpieces, and some were the rotting scum left at the bottom of the dumpsters in the most sordid alleys in Hollywood. This film is the third variety.

There’s not one positive thing I can say about Night of the Demons. Not one. Every element is poorly done, from the writing and direction to the performances and music. It all sucks. Worst of all, none of it is that particular kind of bad that is laughable and fun in its own right. No, this is painfully bad on every level. Not even the MST3K guys would take on this one.

The only other time I’ve felt so annoyed with bad actors was watching a gruesome community theatre production of Bus Stop many years ago. Yes, this is that bad. Even worse in some ways since it’s been touted by some misguided horror lovers as an underground gem.

I understand nostalgia. I get how it can color your opinions of things long past. But, come on people. Why is this drek getting the full-on Shout Factory blu ray treatment, complete with tons of extras? What’s on the disk, just lots of behind the scenes apologies from cast and crew? I’m not even going to mention the names of anyone involved because they have to be embarrassed by this trash.

I could go on (and on) but I think you get the point. John Carpenter’s Halloween, this ain’t. Hell, it isn’t even The Burning. Watch something else. Halloween season is too short to waste 90 minutes of it on this.
